Basingstoke’s community spirit raises £477 for Macmillan Cancer Support
£477 has been donated to Macmillan Cancer Support by The Southern Co-operative’s Funeralcare home in Basingstoke following their participation in the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
According to Funeral Co-ordinators Trisha Gill and Julie Compton, who organised the event, it was a real community event: “Our own Southern Co-operative store in Kings Road, South Ham donated plenty of goodies to fill two hampers to raffle, which our local florist Nicci – G’s kindly decorated and wrapped, and our neighbouring shops in Buckland Parade generously donated prizes too. Our managers and coordinators baked homemade cakes and a special ‘Macmillan Coffee Morning’ iced cake was made by the florist next door.”
The coffee morning attracted around 40 people who squeezed into the small funeralcare home in Buckland Parade to take part, and passers-by donated £120 towards the funds as Trisha and Julie took to the streets to sell the remaining cakes. “Even the local fire service were called upon, not for an emergency but to take cakes back to the station, for which they donated a generous £25!” added Trisha, “It was a wonderful day, a brilliant response and an amazing outcome. We are already looking forward to doing the event again next year.”
